This is my second Jazz festival in Jakarta. 2 years ago I went to Java Jazz. Well, they are both Jazz but different in the atmosphere. JakJazz is an outdoor event, with only 1 main stage indoor.
Waiting outside for almost an hour kinda iritate me. No wonder Indo is well known for ‘Jam Karet’. The ticket says that the event start at 4pm, I came 10 minutes before 4 o’clock, but the gate wont open until almost 5 pm. Tsk.. Committee need to learn from this lesson.
Well, nonetheless, the performers are superb, especially P-I-G and Spyo Gyra. A world class performance I must say. (Padahal gw kayaknya ga ngerti2 amat tentang jazz, but their performances are very enjoyable). There are also the doctor, Ireng Maulana and friends, etc.
PIG is mixing Jazz with traditional bebop, while Spyro Gyra is more towards fast uptempo beat that moves your body and makes you clap your hand.
There is this one person of Spyro Gyra that played clarinet/flute with saxophone altogether, with one left hand on the saxophone, right on the clarinet. Ngeri!!.. I even had trouble playing a single suling or recorder flute. The drummer was really great. He could rap and sing and play drum altogether at the same time. I think he is the newest member of Sypro G. The bassist and the keyboardist are also great. They create a very enjoyable music. I cant wait to buy their new album – “Good to Go-Go”.
Anyway… that was an awesome jazz event. I could not get to see all performance. But that was enough for me, it was all finished at 1.30ish am. At this point of time, my dear friend boim asked, “Chard, makan bubur yuk?” .. Weeww.. as much as I like food, I could barely think of anything but bed and home. So, I rejected that nice offer and went straight home.
Here are some photos..:
