The strap on the neck

Why would most IT – tech guys wear straps on their neck? Be it their three-four-five lock of flash disks, or ID card + server room keys.
I know this may not be always correct, but I still wonder about it.

My own guess is for the to show off purposes. ‘Hey, looky here, I am an IT person. Cant you see from the stuff dangling on my neck?’
